Bound by Sea by Spell Bound by Sea by Spell
Beautiful Medusa in some stories was raped by Poseidon of the sea in the temple of Athena. Athena was so insulted at her sacred shrine's defilement that she cursed Medusa by turning her into a hideous beast. All who looked upon her would turn to stone, and she was doomed to never feel the warmth of a loved one ever again.

I've always thought Medusa gets a raw deal, in art, so I wanted to try and depict her as a victim rather than a monster. She's sitting here in muted shock, tearing strings from her broken heart while she's consumed by the curse of sea and serpent.
Here's what happened: I shrunk it down and then completely forgot i had, kept working on it, then realised, then when I upsized it ofcourse it went all blurry, so I went nuts and reverted then realised that that was five hours behind. If this has ever happened to you you know it is complete agony. Especially just before the comp ends!

So... It's pretty much lost.

This is for :icondianae: 's contest. This is how it looked maybe yesterday. All up I've lost about 12 hours of work. Anyway, the competition ends right now so I'm putting it up.

Hopefully I'll have the strength to paint another 12 hours to get it to where it was...

Wowzers, this is groovy!!!

One thing though, wouldn't it be more scary if she was staring straight forward?

It still looks amazing despite the mishap - and god how I hate when that happens... I like the softer side of Medusa, she does get the rough end of the deal a lot. And damn your use of colour flabberghasts me O_O It should be an illustrated book cover.

Great and unique depiction of Medusa there! And admire the classic painterly look of it too! Very good job!

I almost used Medusa as well but when i thought of all the scaly snakes i had to draw... there went the idea. :) but you definitely did the snakes justice especially the green glowing one on the foreground. :)

Yeah the scales sucked, I'm terrible at scales so I just kept scribbling over and over myself till something that looked kind of scaly popped out :giggle:

Haha... at least you were able to make scales appear juz by scribbling! :) I tried doing scales once and what i did was draw a small portion and copypasted it over the whole thing. LOL

I think you did a fabulous job, evoking a mood as well as a beautiful depiction. I too feel Medusa got a raw deal, but then the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece were all each sometimes cruel and capricious to mortals particularly when it involved another god's actions.

Thankyou!!! :)

Yeah I agree, I like it that they weren't too 'moral' but kind of chaotic.

right, I wrote a comment out, and it got eaten somehow; so I'm trying again;

Stunning use of colours, and I love the texture in her skin. Medusa in general is just gorgeous (she also appears very innocent) and the snakes, are awesome; both the ones in her hair, and the ones in the water (which blend into the waves very well!)

This is an amazing piece, and good luck with the contest! <3

(Also; awesome to properly meet you tonight. sorry I left before saying goodbye; was getting pretty tired, and you'd disappeared. I needed to get home without crashing the car because I fell asleep or something!)

Thankyou so much, I really do appreciate it and I'm honored to hear that from you!

Ha that's fine, sorry I had to run off quickly because my mum wanted me for some urgent thing. It was wonderful meeting you though! I think I was a bit mind blanked and incoherent... so sorry if that was the case, haha

By the way, I have you book!

... my book?? (I didn't take anything into your garden but my car keys/phone. Sure it's mine?)

And I totally understand (I wasn't annoyed or anything, felt a little guilty that I left without saying goodbye to people, so rude of me!!) I had a good time, though I was only there for about an hour; you host a good party. (I haven't been to a party with a fire in SO long.)

Its a shame not to see where that 12 hrs went. Medusa is my favorite in Greek mythology cause of how terrifying she is, looks and abilities. You've captured her innocence here, as if her curse was momentarily casted upon her. Makes me wanna do fanart now.

Beautiful! I'm sorry to hear it's causing you such trouble... but it really does look awesome. I love how you use all the colours on the face, I need to learn to do that better...

And you're right about Medusa, she is always depicted as a monster. But women in Greek mythology generally don't get a lot of sympathy anyway.

Thanks, you! But I don't know what you're talking bout, I started putting colours in the skin because you taught me to back in the good old open canvas days...
Women in most mythologies are either two faced, rape victims or harlots. PAH

Hehe but this is entirely your own.

Yes indeed. Except maybe Medea and Circe.... except I guess they were both kind of evil. But Jason was quite a dink to Medea.
